Is London's Burning going to blazes?
By Derek Robins
Mystery surrounds the future of long-running ITV1 drama London's Burning after a newspaper report that it was being axed.
However, ITV1 chiefs have denied that a decision has been made about the firefighters' series which has run since 1986.
A spokeswoman said: "There is no truth in the story at all. There have been no decisions about its future made yet. Lots of talks are going on about various ITV1 dramas."
Speculation has been rife about the future of London's Burning ever since its number of episodes was cut from 16 to eight for the last series.
Ratings tumbled to as low as 4m during the show's run in the summer. In its heyday in the '90s it was attracting audiences of over 18m when it went out in the autumn and winter.
Fears grew for it when medical drama Peak Practice was axed in the summer after ITV1 bosses warned long-running shows to come up with better plots.
The agent of London's Burning actor Glen Murphy - who has been in the drama since 1988 - is "pretty certain" the long-running show is being axed.
Louise Hillman told TV Plus: "We are pretty certain it isn't going to go again. We have heard all the rumours but we haven't had any official confirmation from Michelle Buck, head of drama at makers LWT."
Glen, who plays firefighter George Green, has recently appeared as a villain in The Bill.
