London's Burning won't go to blazes
By Derek Robins

The team behind London's Burning is confident that the long-running ITV1 drama won't go up in smoke after the latest run - its 14th series.

Producer David Newcombe isn't worried, even though the number of episodes has been cut from 16 to eight. He said: "The stories are stronger and the characters are better crafted.

"The most important thing is we still have the 9pm Sunday slot. I hope it will be even more popular."

Newcombe says it won't suffer the same fate as ITV1 drama Peak Practice, which was axed this week after 10 years.

The fire brigade drama began in 1988 and regularly gets 11m-plus viewers.

He said: "I wasn't concerned about Peak Practice being dropped - Burning has a lot more potential to carry on. It's not another drama about doctors or police, it is still the only drama about the fire brigade."

The series is getting a boost with sexy new characters and hard-hitting plotlines.

It has been given a revamp to counter BBC1's Sunday ratings resurgence with recent hits such as Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Born And Bred.

New recruits include Casualty's Jan Anderson as a provocative new fire station cook, who indulges in phone sex, and Tristan Gemmill as womanising fireman Frank Mooney.

Newcombe says the first episode of the new series on July 7 is "the most action-packed TV drama this year".
