It didn't help with equipment being vandalised and the appliance not working, as it should do. On one occasion, after having an argument with Nancy, Tate did not turn up at work; he just drove straight to Kent and sat staring out to sea.

Tate was forced to retire from the service, after failing a routine medical. The Watch held a leaving do in the SAS and presented Tate with a plaque displaying half of his helmet and an axe.
