HORSE AND PONY MAGAZINE 1997.
CAMPAIGN NEWS
BACK IN APRIL WE LAUNCHED AN
IMPORTANT ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN. THE RESPONSE FROM OUR
READERS WAS OVERWHELMING. NOW YOU CAN ENJOY SEEING
RESULTS OF YOUR HARD WORK...

At last
- the campaign news you've all been waiting for! After
hours of adding up the signatures you sent us, we've
finally reached a grand total. Be proud of yourselves,
H&P readers, because you've managed to convince
120,339 people to take more care when they meet ponies
and riders on the roads. If they each pass just one horse
carefully, that's an awful lot of potential accidents
avoided.

ITS
OFFICIAL!
But
that's not all. We want to make sure your efforts and
hard work would be recognised by people who matter. So
H&P set off for London to present the thousands of
signatures to Baroness Hayman who, as Minister for Roads,
is a key person involved in government decisions about
road safety. We hope she will make every effort to lessen
the dangers riders regularly face, especially as she can
now be in no doubt about the level of concerned riders
have about this issue.

HOT
NEWS
If you
take a peek at the pics on this page there's another
surprise. Spot a face you recognise? Yep, it's the star
of top TV series "London's Burning", Glen
Murphy. The actor is a keen rider and he was happy to
help with our campaign presentation. Glen, better known
as George to his fans, likes nothing better than hacking
out with his two youngest children when he's not filming.
And he's also been busy working to improve riders' road
safety by supporting the British Horse Society's Campaign
2000.

READERS
POWER
With
the help of H&P's Justine and two mounted offficers
from the Metropolitan Police, Great Scotland Yard,
readers Kim Brown, Melissa Calder - Matthews, Alexis
Redwood and Melissa Howe had the honour of handing over
the signatures to Baroness Hayman. Kim managed to collect
the most (628), with Melissa Calder - Mattherws coming a
close second with 613. Alexis and Melissa Howe had strong
reasons for taking part in Road Safety '97, both having
been involved in accidents when riding on the roads. Now,
thanks to all your help, we hope the likelihood of such
sad and unnecessary incidents happening again will be
considered reduced.
